Abstract | A survey of Florida's history comprises this quinmester general social studies course for grades seven through nine. The primary aim is to give students skills and knowledge necessary to understand issues and take part in their resolution, thereby helping students to prepare for effective citizenship in their own state. Objectives of the course focus on the concept of growth, since this idea typifies Florida and has molded the development of the state in the past and present. Arranged in the same way as other quinmester courses, the course is outlined in eight parts: 1) Factors that Affect Growth; 2) Indians of Florida; 3) International Rivalry; 4) Political Development; 5) Economic Development; 6) Social Development; 7) Bio-politics; and, 8) The Future of Florida. A materials section includes recommended textual materials, classroom materials, and teacher references.
