| Abstract | Because it is vitally important to Great Britain that the most highly educated section of the population, comprising many future leaders, should be familiar with the nature and potential of computers, the committee responsible for this report was asked to review the teaching of computing generally, to assess the teaching requirement and its financial implications, and to consider what would be the most effective organizational arrangements between the University Grants Committee and the Computer Board. Some of the recommendations include: (1) computers should be generally available for both teaching and research and not be specifically designated for one or the other; (2) all undergraduates should take a required introductory computing course; (3) the teaching of computing should be done by a departmental staff; (4) data preparation should be carried out by both students and professional operators; and (5) special problems should be resolved in consultation with the Computer Board. Recommendations for the types of computers to be used are also included. (HS) |
