| Abstract | The primary objective of this study was to compare problem solving performance among formal operational, transitional, and concrete operational individuals with the effect of relative field independence taken into account within each of these three cognitive developmental levels. Secondarily, the study explored whether a developmental relationship exists between logical thought and field independence. Eight male and eight female subjects per grade were randomly selected from class lists for sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth grades and classified according to cognitive developmental level. All criterion problems (to be solved) are fully described. Sex and age differences are discussed. In general, the study concludes that Piagetian developmental level does provide an overall theoretical framework in which to understand and interpret differences in complex, deductive problem solving performance, but, in the problems used, field independence does not appear to clarify individual differences in a meaningful way.
