| Abstract | A group of 47 kindergarten and first grade children from a school chiefly composed of Negro children from low-income families was involved in this study which followed a Solomon four group design. All children received a pretreatment of 17 lessons on matching relations and length relations. The pretest group was then given six tests on relations, conservation, and transitivity. The treatment group received nine lessons on conservation of matching relations and the transitive properties; the control group followed normal classroom activities except for two additional lessons on matching relations. Twelve posttests were then administered, including the six used as pretests in a slightly different form. The scores were analyzed by ANOVA and MANOVA using the factors of Treatment, Grade and Pretesting. On MANOVA, only the Grade factor approached significance. On ANOVA, the Grade factor was significant on two tests of matching and conservation, and the Treatment factor was significant on one of the transitivity tests. No pretest effect was found. Analysis of contingency tables failed to show any consistent pattern relating children's performance on the conservation and transitivity tests. (MM) |
