Abstract	This study was undertaken to assemble up-to-date hard financial data on all accredited private institutions of higher education, and to analyze and evaluate these data in order to present a solidly based description of the current situation. The questionnaires returned illustrate that private colleges and universities have reason to be apprehensive about their future. For institutions running deficits, the financial situation goes from serious to critical, and for those colleges operating in the black, things are getting dimmer. Taken collectively, they will not long be able to serve higher education and the nation with strength unless significant aid is soon forthcoming. (HS)
