Abstract | Educational program designs for teachers and parents of urban American Indian youth (especially in Minneapolis and St. Paul) are discussed in this paper. In terms of the suggested program for teachers, the question of what should be included in the curriculum for teacher training is reviewed in 12 areas of concern (e.g., the knowledge base of the teacher as related to the Indian student's language, history, values, and culture); in addition, the structure of the training program is examined in terms of such areas as program length and student teaching in a school with a large number of Indian students. The proposed educational program for parents focuses on 4 content areas: the structure of an urban public school system; school system personnel; policies and procedures of a school system; and techniques and approaches used in dealing with educational institutions and other social service agencies.
