AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the financial investment of public schools in vocational training and the post-school economic status of educable mentally retarded in four communities. Answers were sought to questions centering around: (1) school costs for vocational preparation, (2) the earning power of the students, (3) the financial contributions of these students to their respective communities, and (4) their earning and tax paying ability projected over a period of 10 years. Findings from questionnaire and interview data included: (1) Within the 105 subjects, the cost of preparation ranged from $1,340 to $2,122, (3) The average annual student earnings ranged from $1,218 to $2,463, and (3) In three of the four school systems, students will return the cost of their preparation in 10 years of income taxes. The fourth system included pupils with lower earning power and a higher preparation cost. Based on the findings it was concluded that vocational training of the mentally retarded is a practical economic venture. (Author/JS)
