AbstractThe intent of this report, as stated, is to bring about an awareness of the kinds of problems faced by migrant agricultural workers (Mexican Americans and Navajos), by farmers, and by agencies offering services to these migrants in New Mexico. An overview of the national and state migrant situation is presented, as well as case studies of various New Mexico counties, a discussion of the overall lifestyles of the Mexican American of northern New Mexico and the Navajos on the reservation, economies of the 2 groups, and the role of technology and mechanization. Agency services are described in terms of such areas as housing conditions, health and sanitation, education, economic conditions, social services, labor management and crew leaders, and transportation. Migrant problems discussed include wages (annual average wage of $922); child labor (25% of the migrant work force are under age 16); education (average grade level was 8.6 in 1967, with 17% of these being functionally illiterate); health (per capita health expenditure in 1967 was $12 compared to $200 for the total population); inadequate housing; and benefits (exclusion of unemployment insurance, Social Security, and Workmen's Compensation). State resources, a listing of state agencies, and a bibliography are appended. (JB)
