Abstract	Some important developments affecting the use of the mass media in adult education are described in this collection of papers. A paper by Dr. George Gordon accuses educators of lacking imagination in their whole approach to adult education, especially in their use of the media. Dr. Robert Carlson's paper delineates the history of educational television in the United States. Dr. John Niemi describes a special institute and a graduate course designed to help the adult educator to use the media effectively. Dr. Charles Wedemeyer argues for a systems approach to applying media and technology to instruction. Listening groups are termed the "power plants of democracy" by Dr. John Ohliger in his paper. Dr. Jack Everly's discussion of continuing education via television foresees an increased emphasis on cost-benefit analysis as a spur to adult educators to develop a clear rationale and procedure for evaluating their programs. The dean of educational studies at the Open University of the United Kingdom, Walter James, discusses the genesis of the University and describes the unique partnership that has grown up between the University and the British Broadcasting Company (BBC). The final article, by Dorothy Todd Henaut of the National Film Board of Canada, describes the dramatic changes wrought in several communities following visits from Film Board personnel. (Author/JY)
