AbstractPolicy statements are made to assist groups of teachers in making a self-study of their elementary science programs in light of new ideas and developments. Suggestions include: stating explicit and concrete objectives; selecting instructional materials to give students a first-hand experience to maximize opportunities for them to ask questions, gather data, make interpretations of data, and then formulate reasoned answers to their questions; instructing teachers in writing student-centered objectives; acquainting teachers with new program materials; allocating time for science instruction on a regular basis; having administrators make materials available to teachers; making provision for help by teacher aides; providing leadership and encouragement to teachers in trying new approaches to science instruction; and evaluating learning in direct relation to the objectives established. Many bibliographical references are given to facilitate understanding and to give examples of suggestions made. (JG)
