Abstract | This paper aims at relating the linguistic concept of "register" to the production of TESOL programs, particularly concerning the practical problems of materials selection for advanced level programs. It is the assumption of this paper that this concept is particularly relevant to advanced level programs, when learners are to be able not only to speak or write accurately according to the grammar of English but to speak or write appropriately according to the accepted social and cultural conventions of the language community. The paper reports on the research project conducted by the English Curriculum Section of the Language Bureau, Public Service Commission of Canada, which aims at measuring the register characteristics of a corpus of 1,000 pieces of synchronically sampled administrative correspondence and a sizable corpus of boardroom discussions. It describes how this investigation supplies useful and practical information for the production of advanced level programs. (Author/RL) |
