Abstract	This report documents a broad category of information concerning the first five years of the National Defense Education Act of 1958. Included in the report are the following chapters: (1) concept and practice in non-western area studies, (2) the language and area centers program, (3) impact of the centers program, (4) outlook for the program, and (5) a selected bibliography. Extensive information on government policy, uncommonly-taught language programs, the Chicago Seminar of the Committee on Summer Programs, enrollment data, and government funding is provided in the appendixes.
