AbstractThe problem was to determine similarities and differences in attitudes toward the meaning of the term "outdoor education." The examined population comprised members of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation's (AAHPER) Council on Oftdoor Education and Camping who were associated with colleges and universities. Results were significant. Of the 118 in the population, 97% responded by completing the test instrument. Results indicated that the AAHPER Council was divided into 3 partially overlapping interest groups, each having some individual and some shared attitudes toward the meaning of "outdoor education." The research hypothesis was that agreement existed among members of the AAHPER Council on the meaning of "outdoor education.""Agreement" was operationally defined as at least 70% of the respondents appearing on any one of the attitude factors abstracted by a factor analytic computer program (Q-methodology). Since 70% of the respondents did not appear on any one of the factors, the hypothesis was rejected. Since areas of disagreement appeared, it was within the scope of inquiry to describe the nature of this disagreement. An analysis and interpretation of the extracted factors and an explanation of the concomitant attitude groups described the areas of this disagreement. The 3 prominent attitude groups were the (1) Environment-oriented Group, (2) Conservation-oriented Group, and (3) Outdoor-activity-oriented Group. (Author/LS)
