| Abstract | This comprehensive analysis of course and teacher evaluation deals with the following topics: (1) a capsule history of course and teacher evaluation - where the ideas began and what trends have been established; (2) the right and worth of students' evaluation of courses and teachers, including how it relates to faculty academic freedom; and the accuracy of student opinion and its effectiveness; (3) the possible goals of course and teacher evaluation: including teacher effectiveness, increased awareness among all students of the possibilities for their own education, and general curricular reform; (4) what course and teacher evaluation by students can communicate in terms of course description, teacher effectiveness, and curriculum evaluation; (5) key procedural questions about course and teacher evaluation such as the effects of different types of distribution, collection, and analysis of questionnaires; and (6) how to implement course and teacher evaluation, including types of organization, ways to begin, how to involve faculty, administration and students, finances, questions to ask, procedural hints, and publicity. The appendices include sample questionnaires from unpublished and published programs, sample write-ups from published programs, and a case study of one unpublished program. (Author/AF) |
