Abstract | A special project, undertaken to furnish some of the hard facts on child labor in agriculture in the summer of 1970, resulted in publication of this report. Part I of the report discusses society's attitudes toward agricultural workers, laws about the use of children as industrial laborers, work activities (with definitions of work for the various crops), and migrant working and living conditions. Part II, composed entirely of excerpts from field reports, deals with health, education, wages, and working and living conditions in Washington, Oregon, Ohio, Maine, and California. Part III includes the project outline; an overview of child labor in agriculture; excerpts of the Fair Standards Act of 1938, as amended (1961 and 1966); excerpts of state labor laws from the states used in the study; and facts on child labor from the U.S. Department of Labor.
