AbstractA total of 289 Boston University College of Basic Studies freshmen were randomly divided into two groups: (1) the Experimental Group in which each student was assigned a counselor who was also his psychology instructor; and (2) the Control Group in which each student was assigned a counselor who was not in a teaching relationship to him. Pre-study equivalence was established for the two groups on the basis of personality characteristics, levels of positive mental health, verbal ability, selected background data, and academic motivation. No differences were found between those students who did and did not see their counselors. Further, for those students who did see their counselors, the findings indicated that both groups perceived the interpersonal responses of their counselors in the same way, and that they brought similar problems to them. The study concludes that the teacher-counselor's role does not limit the number or nature of his counseling contacts. No evidence was produced against having a student counseled by one who also teaches him. (TL)
