AbstractThe object of this comparative study of health education conducted by the International Bureau of Education was to obtain an overall view of health education in primary schools throughout the world. Ninety-four countries furnished replies to the inquiry, a seven-part questionnaire, indicating that in all the countries some form of health education is compulsory in the primary schools. However, it was found not all primary schools are equipped to offer a favorable environment for thorough instruction in health. Equipment needed for exercises and practical demonstrations is often lacking, teachers are not always well trained, and the funds available are often insufficient to procure the necessary audio-visual aids. Solutions to problems are not suggested, since these depend on the situation and circumstances prevailing in every country. Included in the document is the questionnaire addressed to the ministries of education and a comparative study for each of the major topics of the questionnaire: place assigned to health education, aims of health education, syllabuses and methods, teaching staff, international action, plans for the future, and miscellaneous information. Summaries of individual reports from each country are also presented. (BL)
