AbstractThe Commission on the Student Press was appointed by the President of the University of California to assess the nature, role and quality of student newspapers at the University of California's campuses and ascertain their degree of effectiveness in meeting student needs. The Commission also considered such issues as (1) how should the student paper be financed and supervised; (2) what is obscene language, and how should its use in campus publications be viewed; and (3) is the student paper an official publication of the university? In doing so, the Commission looked at college journalism also outside California. The report consists of (1) a discussion of the problem and its scope; (2) a review of the history of the University of California; (3) a paper by a campus newspaper editor, Jim Beetinger, on the why's of student unrest; and papers by Melvin Mencher, "The College Newspaper," John B. Wood, "College Newspapers - Northeast," William Porter, "What should be the role of a Student Newspaper?" Arthur E. Sutton, "A Few Thoughts on the Use of Obscenity by Campus Journalists," and John E. Moore, "Reflections on Campus Press Problems." The report concludes with a discussion of the Commission's 8 recommendations, and an epilogue. (AF)
