| Abstract | This book provides a sequence of 10 skill-building games and follow-up activities (beginning with "Getting Acquainted" and ending with "Arriving at a Consensus") designed to give students necessary practice in proper discussion techniques. Fifteen remedial exercises to treat such weaknesses as extreme aggressiveness or a habit of straying from the topic are also included. The book is designed to help secondary school teachers "train their students to participate more effectively in discussions that are generally not teacher-directed and in which either the goals or the means toward the goals are not specified by the teacher." A chapter entitled "On Your Own" encourages teachers to develop their own techniques for improving group discussions and contains a list of 22 books and articles on the subject. Two introductory chapters take up the types and purposes of discussion. (DD) |
