AbstractThis report focuses on the background and development of three sequential courses for grades 8, 9, and 10, and the findings and evaluation on these new instructional materials prepared by the Social Studies Research Committee. Part I of this report makes explicit a set of seven Basic Assumptions about reasons for change in the social studies. Part II tests these seven Basic Assumptions by making reference to twenty-eight distinct pieces of data presented and analyzed, i.e., 1) Antecedent Data, 2) Transaction Data, and 3) Outcome Data. In Part III, a synthesis of the analyses is made of the twenty-eight pieces of data in Part II. In other words, separate findings are brought together in a search for newer more general findings which in turn are utilized to identify further hypotheses and subsequent research. Appendices include: a list of the separate units which comprise the three courses; samples of student interpretation of conceptual understandings developed in the project materials; Social Science Curriculum Study Center (SSCSC) Conferences for Project Teachers and Directors of Demonstration Centers, etc. (Author/JLB)
