| Abstract | According to the author, the aim of the report was to concentrate attention on the conduct of Malay villagers in their relationships with their outside world and on the values and attitudes that underlie this conduct. The inhabitants of the village of Jendram Hilir, who were the subjects of the study, are typical of the segment of the Malay population living along the western coast. The author discusses the Malays' perceptions of "outsiders," such as developers, and the stereotyping and assumptions which play an important part in social relationships. The author states that he has deliberately omitted some of the technicalities of an anthropological report to concentrate on these relationships, which should be of interest to anyone concerned with the political, economic, and social development of Malaysia. It is his belief that any form of development must be concerned, first and foremost, with understanding and development of people. A glossary of colloquial Malay terms is appended. (EJ) |
