| Abstract | This report proposes that the entire basis of composition be reconsidered in terms of total communication--starting with culture (the total interaction of humans) and progressing to the recognition of writing as a symbol system valuable in expressing and ordering the self. Included in the report are discussions of (1) the relationship of written language to culture and communication; (2) types of learning in general, as well as specifically applied to communication and language learning; (3) purposes, objectives, and intentions of teaching composition at the elementary school level; (4) general organization--guidelines for and samples of implementation, and references useful in establishing a composition program; and (5) a proposed pattern for teacher education with extensive bibliographies and outlines for courses in extrinsic instruction (e.g., literature, psychology, and philosophy) and intrinsic instruction (e.g., a composition methods course.)
