Abstract | An evaluation was made of the Tennessee Adult Basic Education Supervisors' Conference, held at Memphis State University, Memphis, Tennessee in August, 1970. Data were gathered from the 52 local supervisors in attendance by use of a questionnaire designed to obtain demographic data and participant reactions. The Kropp-Verner Attitude Scale was used for measuring the overall effectiveness of the conference. Inferential statistics and hypotheses were deleted from the study; only arithmetic means and frequency tables employing percentages were used. The profile of a Tennessee adult basic education supervisor is that of a male, 35 or older, having a Master's degree, with two or more years teaching experience in adult basic education and two or more years as supervisor, and with more than 10 years of experience in public school work at the secondary level. Responses to the evaluative items in the questionnaire showed that the conference was considered to be very successful; the Kropp-Verner Scale supported this. It is recommended that these conferences be continued at least annually. The same methodology should be employed (joint planning by local supervisors, State Department staff, and university personnel) to ensure that the total needs of the State are met.
