Abstract | Chapter I is a descriptive statement of the current financial status and operations of Michigan libraries with an analysis of the implications various modes of financing have on levels and types of services. Chapter II summarizes findings from both the survey conducted by personal interviews with 45 of Michigan's public librarians, randomly selected, and from the mail survey of 100 librarians also randomly selected. Chapter III isolates some special problems of libraries in Michigan, while Chapter IV does the same for large libraries in particular. Chapter V presents a description of Michigan library resources over time and compares some features of these resource levels to other states and standards. Chapter VI summarizes findings on the current status of the State Library and analyzes some of the inadequacies and resultant needs of that library. Chapter VII summarizes recent programs in Michigan and some other states on the uses of university and college libraries as resource centers for the general public. Chapter VIII presents a list of recommendations which takes into account the current service levels of Michigan libraries, providing a practical plan for development toward standards considered minimal by most library authorities.
