Abstract | This report examines and summarizes the needs in mathematics of the Fresno City school system. The study is one in a series of needs assessment reports for PROJECT DESIGN, an ESEA Title III project administered by the Fresno City Unified School District. Theoretical concepts, rather than computational drill, would be emphasized in the proposed mathematics programs. To offset any decline in computational skills, the new program plans to maintain the skill level, yet find time to introduce the new concepts of modern mathematics. The experimental design of this study tabulates a matrix of school system needs. The following needs are summarized: (1) Societal standards, (2) assessment data, (3) strengths and weaknesses, (4) learner needs, (5) instructional needs, (6) administrative and district needs, and (7) a general category of needs. In addition, 37 suggested solutions and 16 major conclusions are contained at the end of the report. (LN) |
