Abstract	The purposes of this study were (1) to compare educational and vocational goals of rural youth with those of their parents for these youth and (2) to determine the relationship of these goals to selected background factors. Three measures were used in the study: a questionnaire about educational and vocational goals, the Hieronymus Scale for measuring attitudes toward education, and the Kuder Vocational Preference Record. The measures were administered to 285 ninth- and tenth-grade students and their parents in rural Virginia. Analysis of the questionnaire indicated that level-of-living was the main factor influencing educational plans for both students and their parents. The Hieronymus Scale indicated that girls, non-members of rural youth organizations, and students from the 2 upper level-of-living groups value education more highly than do boys, members of youth organizations, and students from the low level-of-living group. The Kuder Vocational Preference Record showed that sex was the factor most often related to vocational interests, although some relationships were noted between level-of-living and vocational choice.
