Abstract | International understanding, as an objective of the study of modern languages at the secondary school level, is emphasized due to recent advances in linguistic science and the trend toward interdisciplinary approaches to language study. Special attention is directed to the realization that language and culture are inextricably interwoven and to the design of a curriculum which would develop international understanding as well as communication skills. Other related topics discussed are: (1) native speakers, (2) international contracts, (3) audiovisual materials, (4) role playing, (5) foreign atmosphere, (6) current events, (7) reading, and (8) activities in correlation with other subjects. Curriculum planning, resources for teachers, definition of foreign language study objectives, and urgent needs in the area are also examined. (RL) |
