AbstractSince the central concerns of existentialism are the same as the central concerns of education in a democratic society, namely the fullest and freest development of the individual, existential thought was examined for the help it could give educators in more fully realizing this aim. Specifically, the central existential concept of authenticity was examined by exploring the writings of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Sartre, Jaspers, and Marcel. This concept was then searched for policies and practices that could be used in the training of secondary school English teachers. A suggested course was developed to help prospective teachers become more aware of their individuality and that of their students, to challenge them to devlop a passionate commitment to their educational goals, and to suggest unique approaches to selecting and presenting material and relating to students. Finally, hypotheses were framed and possible sources of evidence were indicated to test the impact of the proposed course on future intern teaching. (Author/DB)
