AbstractThis study was undertaken to assess the educational value of an exchange program which enables teacher candidates from the University of Michigan to participate in a one-semester program of study (involving both professional and supervised teaching courses) at the University of Sheffield in England. The comparative study was designed to test the hypothesis that participants in the exchange "tend to become more sensitive and informed about domestic and international problems and more professional in outlook and behavior than would be the case if they spent all their college days in American institutions." One hundred and twenty-seven exchange students were matched with 127 non-participating students for the period between 1961 and 1966. Three instruments (included in the appendix section of this report) were developed to measure and compare attitudes and teaching performance of the exchanges and members of the matched group. Given "the assumption that it is possible to rate the attitude responses in terms of the desirability of certain views in modern society and education," statistical analysis of differences between the two groups "show the exchange project to be superior to the available alternative way of educating teachers" and lead to the recommendation that this experimental approach to teacher education be continued and/or expanded.
