Abstract | Layouts of the campuses of nine American, English and Canadian universities show how five types of growth patterns (axial, linear, radial, precinctual and cellular/grid) provide for flexibility in expansion. The site of the campus, a major influence in growth patterns, is discussed from the aspects of location, accessibility, physical characteristics, and climate. Pedestrian and vehicular movement patterns are also illustrated and discussed. Plans and descriptive diagrams develop the theme throughout. (RK) |
