Abstract	This paper summarizes some of the considerations which have affected the Center's research directions during the first half year of operation. The focus on the individual and on how educational policy choices relate to the individual is justified by three characteristics of the years ahead. (1) The role of education in alleviating social problems is becoming increasingly broad. It is argued that an urgent task of education and, therefore, of the Center, is to promote desirable changes in deeply rooted beliefs, values, attitudes, and behavior patterns. (2) Individuals and institutions will continue to be subjected to stresses from technological and social change. This necessitates that education prepare individuals for the future and help determine what that future society may be like. (3) The nation has the material and technological resources to implement the national goal of well-being for the individual. National goals are repeated which stress the balance of educational systems between the roles of serving a socializing function and aiding individual self-fulfillment. In conclusion, the Center's future contributions to educational change are considered. (MLF)
