Abstract | In order to assess the impact of different college environments on student development and to provide a source of current, readily available information about college students, the American Council on Education (ACE) has undertaken a large-scale program of longitudinal research on the higher educational system. The program will be based primarily on a comprehensive file of information from a representative sample of higher education institutions which will be updated annually. ACE's research data file is designed to incorporate the best features of a data base (descriptive information that will eventually become outmoded) and a data registry (information that is stored for future use). It will include longitudinal records on students, with special emphasis on student development, and 4 categories of institutional data: finances and financial policies, curriculum, administrative policies and practices, and faculty. The research data file is designed to serve 3 basic functions: research, information, and training, and will possibly be used by other educational organizations and individuals as a research tool. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the rationale, design, current status, and possible applications of the program. (WM) |
