AbstractThe study was undertaken to assess the needs of and facilities for professional nurse education in the 14-county region of Southern New York in order to provide direction for future planning. The information used in the study was a composite of: (1) available statistics, (2) data collected from 855 study participants through interviews, group discussions, and questionnaires, and (3) data obtained by surveying the educational and residence facilities of 39 of the 60 nursing schools in the region offering initial professional nursing educational programs in 1963-64. In all, 40,500 were currently employed and an additional 14,500 were estimated to be needed. By 1975, another 4,000 will be required in spite of increases in graduating classes. Fifteen recommendations include the following: (1) employer assessment of nurse utilization and working conditions, (2) greater hospital responsibility for selection and in-service training of workers employed to assist professional and technical personnel, (3) educational programs to assist out-of-country nurses to become licensed, (4) legislation providing assistance to nursing education, and (5) a crash recruitment program.
