Abstract | Intended to provide assistance for developing new programs and improving existing ones, the guide was constructed by dental assisting instructors and other professional participants in a 196 5 workshop conference. Elements of the model program were derived from a statistical analysis of California junior colleg e programs in dental assisting and include courses in the major area of dental assisting, related fields, and general education. Behavioral objectives and content outlines are presented for seven subject matter fields: (1) introduction to dental assisting, (2) bio-dental sciences, (3) dental materials, (4) practice administration, (5) radiography, (6) operatory procedures, and (7) laboratory procedures. Objectives and content outlines are also included for supervised clinical experience. The sequence of instruction is considered an individual school perogative. Recommendations include: (1) the program setting of a collegiate institution and the conferring of an associate degree, (2) approximately equal amounts of general education related courses and of specialized courses, (3) clinical experience in dental schools, clinics o r hospitals, and private offices, and (4) appointment of an advisory committee of dentists and dental assistants.
