| Abstract | This monograph contains the second section, operations at the variable level, of a report of studies done in Helsinki, Finland, describing school achievement in terms of ability, trait, situational, and background variables. The report (1) investigates the structure of school achievement, (2) describes school achievement in terms of selected personality variables, and (3) applies multidimensional statistical operations in situations where it is considered desirable to reduce the number of dimensions and describe a set of dependent variables in terms of a set of independent variables in a single operation. Part II gives an account of the construction and psychometric properties of the variables. Information provided by correlation coefficients, factor analyses, congruence coefficients, and canonical analyses are employed to describe school achievement in terms of the personality variables of the study. Invariance of empirical dimensions is studied through transformation analysis and the congruence coefficients of factors. Results suggest separate statistical treatment of boys and girls. Canonical analysis shows that new solutions concerning the bases of this type of operations should be sought. (BP) |
