Abstract	A paramount objective of the middle school is to further the self-development of its students in the several academic disciplines, study skills, problem analysis, and problem solving areas. The curricula content is determined by students and the professional staff members working with them. Emphasis is on individual growth with student involvement in program determination. The curricular frame of reference for middle schools is composed of four disciplines--social science, science, mathematics, and language arts. Activities and practices considered unacceptable to middle schools are self-contained classrooms, the use of professionals to teach one or two subjects, disregard of individual student interest, use of grades as motivators, fact regurgitation, and interscholastic athletics. Four examples of the program structure and organization of middle schools are provided. A further example is provided by tracing the development of a Midwest middle school. Middle schools emphasize that student programming be innovative and flexible. Scheduling is developed to fully utilize human resources while meeting student requirements.
