AbstractThis historical study analyzes the national development of educational television (ETV) within the context of American political, social, economic, and intellectual life of the 1950's and 1960's. The efforts of ETV activists such as Frieda Hennock, C. Scott Fletcher, and John White to gain sufficient high-level support for ETV are examined. Primary documents as well as personal interviews with many individuals who played crucial roles in bringing ETV into being supplied the data. The study shows that at the national level educational television has been largely an institution of informal adult education because of early backing by the Fund for Adult Education. It has remained that way despite efforts to make it a part of formal elementary, secondary, and higher education by the professional educational establishment and by the Fund for the Advancement of Education. The most influential support for the ETV institution has come from the Senate Committee on Commerce and from the Ford Foundation. (author/nl)
