Abstract | Reported are the proceedings of a conference on the problems of training elementary teachers in mathematics and science. A small group of scientists, educators, and researchers representing school teachers from the elementary level through college, science and mathematics administrators and educators, scientists, government officials, and representatives from science and mathematics related industries met to take first steps in dealing with the problems. Goals of the conference were to produce action resolutions and recommendations which, when implemented, would (1) be effective in improving the science and mathematics curricula reaching the elementary school pupil, and (2) bring about integration of teaching of mathematics and science in the elementary school classroom. Specifically considered were the curriculum, the preservice and inservice training of teachers, and the capacity of American public school systems to respond to a changing curriculum. Several recommendations and guidelines for action were developed relating specifically to school administrators, classroom teachers, supervisors, and college and university personnel. (GR) |
