| Abstract | This study investigated the extent to which the Analytic Trouble Shooting Program (ATS) trained troubleshooters in an automobile assembly plant (1) to use information about a problem to determine the cause of that problem and (2) to anticipate and prevent problems. Troubleshooters in two specific departments were general foremen, foremen, process engineers, industrial engineers, quality control supervisors, and certain skilled tradesmen (mainly electricians). Forty experimental and 40 control subjects were used. Course content learning was evaluated by a multiple-choice test and by trouble shooting reports of trainees who had used ATS on the job. The trainees significantly outscored the controls in using ATS to gather information about a problem; however, they were not rated significantly higher than the controls in using information to identify the causes of trouble. Relative to the controls, the trained group had improved on operating efficiency; but the change could not be confidently attributed to ATS training.
