AbstractAn in-depth study was conducted in three selected cities to determine recommendations for improvement of vocational education. Some findings were: (1) Most students entered the world of work without specialized occupational training, (2) Enrollment in vocational programs was higher when students were taught in comprehensive schools, (3) An imbalance existed between high school enrollments in vocational programs and local labor market composition, (4) Vocational education in the smaller cities was altered more closely to the areas of the labor market, (5) The majority of the graduates did not recall being reached by counselors, (6) Vocational graduates had greater employment stability, received more rapid increases in earnings, and received higher averaged monthly earnings, (7) Extra earnings of the vocational graduates justified the cost of their education, and (8) Less than one-half of the male graduates obtained jobs that were directly related to their training. It was recommended that: (1) programs in broad general skills with general applications be developed, (2) programs be aimed at the large proportion of students who see little relevance in either vocational or academic curriculums, (3) vocational education bring meanings and interest to the learning experience (4) opportunity be provided for employment exploration and familiarization as an integral part of the curriculum, and (5) vocational guidance be expanded.
