Abstract | A survey of 11 of Minnesota's 16 state junior colleges begins with a discussion of the present situation and problems of junior college English and of the growth and function of the junior college. The major portion of the document presents the results of the survey based on a questionnaire which covered the following areas: (1) abilities and educational goals of the students, (2) titles and descriptions of courses offered in the English departments, (3) remedial courses, (4) levels of instruction, (5) class size, (6) content of freshman composition courses, (7) types of textbooks used, (8) supplementary materials used, (9) methods of instruction, (10) syllabi, and (11) follow-up evaluation of the student's communication skills. Recommendations and conclusions suggested by the study are discussed. Appendixes include a list of participating colleges and the questionnaire mailed to English department chairmen. (BN) |
