AbstractAn attempt was made to determine relationships between certain elements of adult educatio n participation and social change in the economic regions of Canada (Atlantic Provinces, Quebec, Ontario, Prarie Provinces, and British Columbia). The five regions were measured for participation rates, for rates of change in urbanization, population growth, industrialization, productivity, geographic mobility, standards of living, the significance of kinship, and the social structure, and for levels of development on these same variables. Static and dynamic elements of each variable pair were compared with each other as well as with participation rates. The following conclusions were reached--(1) regional participation rates appear to correlate closely with, and may be linked with, certain aspects of change toward modernity, (2) such participation would be most likely to correlate with consistent long rates of change as well as with the current rate of change and the level of development attained, and (3) regional or collective trends in participation cannot be accurately predicted from known patterns of behavior alone.
