Abstract	To the adult educator it is basic to know what are adult interests, how do they affect participation and learning, and how may they be aroused or changed. Strong pioneered in the formulation of an interest inventory for the study of vocational interests and Super extended the use of Strong's test to the study of leisure interests to determine the psychological role of avocational interests. Other studies support findings that the number of interests does not change with age, but the content does; the span of interests correlates with intelligence. Reading interests can be differentiated by sex, education, occupation, age, size of community, geographic environment, and time spent reading. Accessibility, rather than interest, is the major factor in determining actual reading. Research on participation has shown that though volume and content of interests do not change with age, there is a trend away from social interests to individualized ones. Studies of interests and learning have been made in college credit situations; there is a lack of comparable research in adult education because of lack of measures of ability and lack of control groups. All the studies are subject to the basic theory considerations, especially the extent to which subjective phenomena may be objectively measured and studied. (sg)
