| Abstract | Universities have either ignored or made only piecemeal attempts to solve the gravest domestic problem in US history, the urban crisis. Although institutional barriers, such as specialized or entrenched interests, ignorance of municipal complexities, and faculty prerogatives and research habits, hinder active off campus involvement, academic priorities should and can be reshuffled to focus attention on the significant intellectual questions and specific technical needs of the city. Presently existing reservoirs of faculty and student talent and concern could be tapped for "urban task forces" that would cooperate with or help create local urban coalitions. By forming new relationships with other community elements, universities could render the nation, and probably themselves, a great service. (JS) |
