Abstract | Prepared in connection with the World Congress of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy (Teheran, September 8-19, 1965), this UNESCO report on literacy as a factor in development focuses on worldwide literacy education and the dimensions of illiteracy, the role of literacy in economic and technological development and in social change and development planning, program costs and financial support, the aims, organization, and methods of literacy work, bilateral aid and other forms of international cooperation, and the influence of illiterates and other segments of society on program success. Alternative approaches and new strategies, links between literacy and other kinds of education, and typical operational problems (adult teaching, staffing, language of instruction, textbooks and supporting materials, audiovisual aids, and evaluation) are also considered. In addition, a tentative assessment is made of past successes and failures in mass literacy campaigns. (ly) |
