Abstract | THE LEICESTERSHIRE COUNTY (ENGLAND) EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM PROVIDES A LEARNING ATMOSPHERE IN WHICH EACH PUPIL CHOOSES HIS OWN ACTIVITIES AND WORKS IN A GIVEN SUBJECT AREA UNTIL HE IS READY TO CHANGE ACTIVITIES. THE SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS DROPPED THE TRADITIONAL ELEVEN-PLUS EXAMINATION, DESIGNED TO SELECT HIGHLY ABLE STUDENTS (ABOUT 1/5) FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS. INSTEAD, PUPIL MOTIVATION IS BASED ON INDIVIDUAL INVOLVEMENT. THE TEACHER SEES THAT CHILDREN HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO TRY A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES, HAS PROGRAMMED LESSONS READY TO SATISFY THE NEEDS OF THE MOST ADVANCED PUPILS, AND OBSERVES AND NOTES WORK PERFORMANCE. SHE SELECTS MATERIALS AND APPROACHES TO LEARNING WHICH SHE FEELS ARE RELEVANT. THERE IS NO ESTABLISHED FORMULA FOR THE SCHOOLS, HOWEVER. THERE ARE DIFFERENCES FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL AND EVEN FROM ROOM TO ROOM. EXPONENTS OF THE LEICESTERSHIRE PROGRAM SUGGEST THAT A MAJOR BENEFIT IS THE STUDENT'S MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS SECONDARY SCHOOL. SIMILAR METHODS OF INDIVIDUALIZED TEACHING MAY BE EFFECTIVE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AS WELL AS IN AMERICA. FIVE APPENDIXES INCLUDE TEACHER DISCUSSIONS OF THE INTEGRATED DAY, VERTICAL GROUPING, OBSERVATIONS OF AN INFANT SCHOOL DIRECTOR, SUGGESTED READING ON THE LEICESTERSHIRE PROJECT, AND RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT.
