Abstract | A PROJECT INVOLVING STORING AND SEARCHING READING RESEARCH BY COMPUTER WAS CONDUCTED (1) TO IDENTIFY, COLLECT, AND ORGANIZE A BASIC CORPUS OF RESEARCH DOCUMENTS FROM THE PUBLISHED RESEARCH LITERATURE ON READING, (2) TO PRODUCE A MASTER FILE MAGNETIC TAPE CONSISTING OF CITATIONS AND ANNOTATIONS FOR COMPUTER STORAGE AND MANIPULATION, (3) TO DESCRIBE THE INFORMATION NETWORK AND FLOW OF RESEARCH LITERATURE IN READING AND TO IDENTIFY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DOCUMENTS COMPRISING THE MASTER FILE, AND (4) TO EXPLORE THE FEASIBILITY OF USING THE MASTER FILE AS PART OF THE DATA BASE IN AN INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM. IN ADDITION, POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PROJECT AND THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER (ERIC) AND THE ERIC/CRIER CLEARINGHOUSE ON READING WERE EXPLORED. THE 5,380 CITATIONS IN THE GRAY SUMMARIES ON READING RESEARCH WERE PUT ON A MAGNETIC TAPE MASTER FILE AND WERE USED AS THE DATA BASE FROM WHICH TO DEFINE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK IN READING. ONE OF THE TRENDS IDENTIFIED WAS THE INCREASING IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL READING ASSOCIATION IN THE GENERATION OF RESEARCH LITERATURE ON READING. AN ANALYSIS OF THE DATA INDICATED A GRADUAL INCREASE IN INFORMATION ON READING RESEARCH OVER THE PAST FOUR DECADES, WITH MUCH MORE RAPID GROWTH SINCE THE LATE 1950'S. THERE ARE NOW FOUR TIMES AS MANY JOURNALS REPORTING SEVEN TIMES AS MANY ARTICLES ON READING RESEARCH AS THERE WERE DURING THE EARLIER YEARS OF THE GRAY SUMMARIES. THE FINDINGS OF THIS PROJECT, WHEN USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ERIC SYSTEM, APPEAR TO PROVIDE A WORKING BASE FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN EFFECTIVE SPECIALIZED INFORMATION CENTER FOR READING.
