AbstractA STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF SCHOOL REDISTRICTING ON THE EDUCATION OF MALES AND FEMALES AND ON THE COMMUNITIES INVOLVED IN SCHOOL REDISTRICTING WAS CONDUCTED IN WISCONSIN. BASIC OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY INVOLVED COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN REDISTRICTED AND NON-REDISTRICTED SCHOOL SYSTEMS. COMPARISONS WERE MADE TO--(1) DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE IN OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED MALE AND FEMALE STUDENTS, (2) ANALYZE DIFFERENCES IN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND INTELLIGENCE LEVEL OF STUDENTS, (3) DETERMINE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND EXPENDITURES FOR EDUCATION, AND (4) DETERMINE EFFECTS ON FARMERS' SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONTACTS. FIVE REDISTRICTED COMMUNITIES WERE MATCHED WITH FIVE TRADIONALLY-ORGANIZED SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND STARTING WITH GRADE 1, STUDENTS WERE COMPARED FOR 12 YEARS. MATCHING CRITERIA INCLUDED DISTRICT ENROLLMENT, PHYSICAL FACILITIES, SIZE OF COMMUNITY TAX BASE, BUS TRANSPORTATION, AND COMMON INTERESTS. STUDENTS WERE TESTED IN GRADES 1,6,9, AND 12. IT WAS FOUND THAT--(1) OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED FOR THE EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS WERE GREATER IN REDISTRICTED SCHOOLS, (2) BOTH MALES AND FEMALES FROM REDISTRICTED SCHOOLS PERFORMED BETTER IN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, AND (3) ONLY MINOR VARIATIONS IN SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONTACTS EXISTED BETWEEN REDISTRICTED AND NON-REDISTRICTED SCHOOL COMMUNITIES.
