AbstractIN HER 17TH YEAR OF SERVICE AT A JUNIOR COLLEGE OF ABOUT 2,800 STUDENTS, A PROFESSOR WAS SUSPENDED AND THEN DISMISSED. THE SITUATION LEADING TO THIS ACTION INCLUDED (1) A REDUCTION IN LOAD, ACCOMPANIED BY REDUCTION IN SALARY, (2) A TRANSFER FROM ONE DEPARTMENT TO ANOTHER, (3) CHARGES OF "CONTUMACIOUS" CONDUCT, (4) INTERPRETATIONS OF POLICIES OF THE BOARD, (5) AMENDMENTS TO SUCH POLICIES, (6) ACADEMIC DUE PROCESS, AND (7) TENURE. AN INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED BY A SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS' COMMITTEE A ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND TENURE. THE SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTED (1) THAT THE DISMISSAL VIOLATED THE PROFESSOR'S TENURE RIGHTS, BOTH BY AAUP STANDARDS AND THE REGULATIONS OF THE COLLEGE, (2) THAT ACADEMIC DUE PROCESS HAD NOT BEEN OBSERVED, AND THAT (3) SUBSEQUENT ACTIONS OF THE ADMINISTRATION AND THE BOARD HAVE RENDERED INSECURE BOTH ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND TENURE.
