Abstract | THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE WAYS IN WHICH THE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT OF RACINE, WISCONSIN, WILL USE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT, TITLE I FUNDS. THE PROJECT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THREE "UNITIZED" SCHOOLS WITH RESTRUCTURED GRADE ORGANIZATIONS AND TEAM TEACHING INSTRUCTION, THE USE OF ART AND MUSIC SPECIALISTS IN TWO SCHOOLS, AND A REMEDIAL READING PROGRAM IN FOUR SCHOOLS. THERE WILL ALSO BE AN EXTENDED-DAY PROGRAM, A CLASS FOR EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED CHILDREN, AND A SPECIAL SUMMER SCHOOL IN NINE SCHOOLS. THE FUNDS WILL ALSO BE USED FOR A MILK PROGRAM, TRANSPORTATION FOR PUPILS AND PARENTS TO ENABLE PARTICIPATION IN FIELD TRIPS, HOME-SCHOOL WORKERS, AND INSERVICE TEACHER TRAINING. THERE WILL BE A "FOLLOW-THROUGH" PROJECT IN WHICH DISADVANTAGED PRESCHOOL CHILDREN WILL BE PLACED IN "OUTER-CITY" KINDERGARTENS AND GIVEN A 3-HOUR SESSION IN A "DIAGNOSTIC AND DEVLELOPMENTAL ENRICHMENT CENTER." A TWICE-A-WEEK EXTENDED DAY IS A COMPONENT OF THIS PROJECT, WHICH WILL ENCOURAGE PARENT PARTICIPATION. THE BUDGET FOR THE PROJECT IS APPENDED TO THE REPORT. (NH) |
